Staff Attorney – Full Time
Salary Range: $68,000 – $75,000
Location: Montpelier, Vermont (hybrid opportunities available)
Disability Rights Vermont is Vermont’s federally designated Protection & Advocacy (P&A) organization. DRVT works to promote the equality, dignity, and self-determination of people with disabilities through individual and systemic advocacy, legal representation, public education, monitoring and investigations, and policy reform.
DRVT is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to join our legal team. This position is ideal for an attorney interested in meaningful public interest work that combines legal advocacy, systems change, collaboration, and community engagement.
The Staff Attorney will work on a wide range of disability rights issues, including discrimination, access to services and supports, reasonable accommodations, abuse and neglect investigations, victims’ rights advocacy, and broader systemic reform efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal advocacy and representation to people with disabilities
- Identify and develop individual and systemic advocacy strategies
- Conduct monitoring, outreach, investigations, and public education activities
- Collaborate with community partners, service providers, and stakeholders
- Draft legal memoranda, reports, correspondence, and educational materials
- Participate in policy advocacy and systems change efforts
- Conduct trainings and presentations throughout Vermont
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice law in Vermont or eligible for admission
- Strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest, civil rights, or social justice work
- Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Experience with disability rights, public benefits, administrative advocacy, or civil rights issues is a plus
- Litigation, clerkship, fellowship, or policy advocacy experience is a plus, but not required
Salary is competitive for a nonprofit public interest legal organization and is based on experience. DRVT offers a comprehensive benefits package.
