Legal Director
Location: Montpelier, VT (Hybrid options available)
Position Type: Full-time, Exempt
Disability Rights Vermont (DRVT), the state’s federally designated protection and advocacy system, seeks an experienced Legal Director to lead our legal team under the direction of our Executive Director, in defending and advancing the rights of people with disabilities. This position offers the opportunity to shape high-impact litigation and advocacy while mentoring attorneys and carrying a caseload that drives systemic change.
Key Responsibilities
- Litigation & Strategy: Supervise and conduct litigation in state and federal courts; guide staff on strategy, appeals, and case development.
- Supervision & Training: Oversee attorney casework, review service requests, and coordinate staff training.
- Leadership & Advocacy: Serve as a legal resource; foster collaboration; identify emerging disability rights issues and develop innovative responses.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure adherence to ethical standards, DRVT policies, and professional responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Active license to practice law in Vermont, or eligibility for Vermont licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
- Minimum of seven years of experience as a lawyer.
- At least 3 years of civil litigation experience required.
- Knowledge or experience with social security law and regulations is preferred.
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Commitment to disability rights and working collaboratively with people with disabilities.
