Civic and Community Engagement Advocate
Location: Montpelier, VT (with statewide travel)
Position Type: Full-time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Schedule: Flexible 37.5 hours per week; occasional evenings and weekends required
Disability Rights Vermont (DRVT), the state’s designated protection and advocacy system, seeks a Civic and Community Engagement Advocate to advance the rights of people with disabilities through public-facing advocacy, community engagement, and civic participation initiatives.
This position focuses on training and public education, community outreach, civic engagement, and voting rights advocacy, while supporting DRVT’s broader systems-level advocacy efforts. The role is highly collaborative and involves building relationships across communities, organizations, and coalitions statewide.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct outreach and advocacy in community settings throughout Vermont, including community programs, local organizations, and public events.
- Engage in community and civic activities, including events, meetings, forums, and tabling related to disability rights and access.
- Provide information, referrals, and advocacy assistance to individuals with disabilities, as appropriate.
- Support systemic advocacy efforts, including public education, policy engagement, and legislative or civic outreach.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and trainings to community groups, partners, and the public.
- Distribute informational materials and conduct informal drop-in outreach as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of advocacy activities using DRVT’s database and technology systems.
- Collaborate with DRVT staff to ensure advocacy work aligns with agency priorities and compliance requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, and/or experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to disability rights and working respectfully with people with disabilities.
- Knowledge of, or interest in, legislative or civic processes is a plus.
- Strong organizational, writing, and computer skills.
- Ability to work independently, make decisions under pressure, and solve problems creatively.
- Willingness and ability to travel statewide (valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required).
